Question (質問)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Currently I am working on the SUZAKU satellite data of Her-X1 (observation id: 405058030, Date:01/10/2010). In this ID, It is observed that the some black straight lines in the clean and unfiltered data files of XISs. For support of this argument, I am sending the image files of XIS. Please find the attachment. Is this data usable for scientific purpose? and what will be possible cause of black lines (data gap). Please explain it. I am thankful to you.
Eagerly waiting for your response.

Answer (答え)

The black lines in the XIS images are due to charge injection function of the XIS chips in orbit. Several amounts of charges are periodically injected to X-ray CCDs to reduce effects of damages by cosmic-rays in orbit. Since they are artificial charges causing lines in images, we remove them for scientific analyses. Note that it is considered in generation of arf (i.e., calculation of effective area) for spectral fittings.

For detail, please check the technical description of Suzaku, which is available from the following URL. See section 7.6.

comment:

Only you have to be careful about the effect by the space charge injection is the arf generation by xissimarfgen, when you analyse a point source and are interested in the spectra. The reduction of the effective area is automatically corrected by the tool. Please note that the exposure map by xisexpmapgen also include the charge-injection effect (which may be used for generation of images.)
