Question (質問)

1. I am trying to reduce the Suzaku data 702001010 (NGC4395, PI: Y Tanaka). One problem I am having is the tuned bgd file for the PIN. I have downloaded the BGD file and read it in to xselect (successfully). However, when I try to extract a spectrum, xselect crashes with "Segmentation fault". I had no problem with extracting a spectrum from the PIN event file for the real observation. Could you please help us to understand what went wrong?

The data reduction is made on a Intel Mac with OS X 10.5.5 with HEASOFT 6.4.1, which was compiled by the user, with gcc 4.0.1 and g77 3.4.0.

2. Another question is about reprocessing of the PIN event file. The TSTART of the downloaded cleaned PIN event file is before 28 Jul 2007 but processing version is 2.0.6.1. I assumed reprocessing need to be done and followed the procedure described in Appendix A in the 7steps document on the web, but on the CLEANED event file. Did I have to start with the unscreened event file instead?

Answer (答え)

1. The versions of C and Fortran mismatch. Please install g95 or gfortran which matches your cc. As described in http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/software/lheasoft/supported_platforms.html, you can install it through fink, or from www.g95.org in the case of g95. The webpage says g95 is preferred.

2. For PIN, the event selection becomes tigher as you use threshold (pinthr) at newer epoch. Therefore, there is no problem to reprocess your cleaned event file(s). For the GSO data, however, events dicarded by hxdpi and hxdgrade are difference, and hence, you have to reprocess your uncsreened event file(s). The 7 steps will be revised by the HXD team so as not to give afalse impression.
